Finding opportunities in change

Finding opportunities in change

Staffing changes are a challenge in any environment, but recent changes to the Kidsfirst Hornby teaching team also provided the chance to reflect and build on the positives.

When two new kaiako joined Kidsfirst Hornby, the adaptability, proactivity, and sense of humour that were already strong in the kindergarten culture became the foundation for something even more special. This year, the teaching team was recognised as Ngā Whetū Uara o Kidsfirst for their efforts.

Through kotahitanga in action, the kindy’s welcoming spirit shines through. Regular events bring families together and create connections that extend far beyond the kindy day. Feedback from whānau acknowledging the extra mahi kaiako do to ensure every child has a rich kindergarten experience reflects how deeply families feel valued and supported.

Tamariki experience joy through everyday moments, and whakamanamana is woven into everything at Hornby – not just special celebrations, but in daily rhythms and routines. Tamariki see kaiako looking for humour and happiness, even in challenging moments, and are encouraged to try to find the silver lining in their own tricky situations.

The kindergarten’s commitment to whakaute extends to connections with agencies, local schools, and the wider early childhood education network. Kaiako make sure the kindergarten – and in turn tamariki and whānau – benefit from these strong ties.

When Hornby tamariki took the stage at Hornby High School’s 2024 Fiafia night with a Samoan pese, the moment perfectly captured the ways the kindergarten celebrates the many cultures that make up its community. These authentic expressions of whanaungatanga help tamariki and whānau see their own heritage reflected and valued, and nurtures a feeling of belonging and respect for all.

Change hasn’t disrupted the sense of community at Kidsfirst Hornby – it’s strengthened it. Through intentional relationship building, thoughtful adaptation, and an unwavering belief in the value of kotahitanga, they’ve created a place where finding growth in challenges is at the heart of everything.
