Manaakitanga for hatched hen
Manaakitanga (care for others) was at the forefront of learning for Kidsfirst The Bays’, when their brooding hen hatched an egg she had been laying on, just in time for Easter. The tamariki were more than ready to offer up their support. They’ve been looking after their new chick, observing its growth and its changing colours, with real enthusiasm.
Holi brings more than just colour
It was an early start to Holi – the Festival of Colour – at Kidsfirst Phillipstown, as they celebrated ahead of the two-day event that marks the arrival of Spring in India. Tamariki had a blast throwing coloured flour across their big backyard at each other (and some unlucky kaiako), and were later joined by whānau and friends. Teacher Bindu Naik says acknowledging the festival helps tamariki develop ‘cultural intelligence’ and learn about the diverse backgrounds that make our Kidsfirst community so unique — take a look at some photos from the Phillipstown’s big day.
Smiling for happiness & health
There’s no better way to show you care about the health of your mouth than with a big, bright smile. That’s why today we’re celebrating World Happiness Day, and World Oral Health Day! What a great time to share some aroha, and give someone a great, big grin.
Mega fundraising efforts at Mitre 10
They’re hard at work at Kidsfirst Sumner, getting ready for a big day of fundraising tomorrow, for an even better #betterbecause Big Backyard. Head on down to Ferrymead Mitre 10 Mega, between 9am and 4pm tomorrow, and grab a fresh-off-the-BBQ sausage, or bacon butty. You’ll be supporting a great cause in the process. See you there!
Raising baking for new carpentry area
The kindergarten bake sale has been a tradition for as long as kindy has existed, and they’re always a great way to get tamariki involved, connect with friends, whānau and local communities Kidsfirst Kaiako sold out when they set up shop at Estuary Fest on the weekend, raising money for a new carpentry area. Thanks to everyone who supported the Bays, and we hope you enjoyed the treats.
Getting amongst the community roadworks
At Kidsfirst, we’re all about connections and community – that’s one of the reasons you’ll see our tamariki out and about so much. The other is – fun! It was a big day out for Kidsfirst Lady May tamariki, who got to watch the road works at the end of the street, saw their local courier driver and even got a wave from a passing fork lift operator on the way to Hansen’s Reserve. A great time was had by all, and tamariki loved sharing stories about visits to the park with their own families.

Sunflower surprises in the garden
Kidsfirst Sumner’s big backyard had a surprise for tamariki when they returned from their summer break – the sunflowers they planted last August had grown to an enormous height. The children learned about the seeds and their life cycle, from birds eating and distributing them, to the children collecting and planting their own. This is the perfect opportunity to learn about being kaitiaki in one of our #BigBackyards.
Sending love on the earthquake anniversary
This tenth anniversary, we’re thinking of all who lost loved ones and those whose homes were damaged or destroyed – and thanking the wonderful whānau and kaiako who helped tamariki through
Celebrating over a half a decade of learning
Happy 52nd birthday to Kidsfirst Cotswold Ave. To celebrate, they unveiled their new #betterbecause outdoor area with a colourful mural as its centrepiece, and this afternoon hosted a fun filled party for whānau, tamariki and friends of the kindergarten throughout the years.
