Little hands shape big learning

At Kidsfirst Phillipstown, getting your hands into a big bowl of dough and seeing what shapes emerge is a Monday morning tradition. It’s a great way to start the week with some sensory learning, which is a term we use a lot in relation to the hands-on activities that help stimulate motor skills and tamariki’s developing nervous systems. It’s serious stuff, but like everything that happens at kindergarten, it all starts with whakamanamana, kia kaha te mahi – keep up the great work 😊❤️

Tamariki share cultural pride

At Kidsfirst’s 60-plus kindergartens, every day is a celebration of all the worlds of kindergarten. Tamariki expand their horizons, learn that our differences make us special, and to connect and learn in that uniquely kindy way. Kidsfirst Edmonds Smith Street’s recent Cultural Day is a great example of how whanaungatanga and kotahitanga sit at the heart of these events. Our thanks to all the Kidsfirst whānau who so passionately share the traditions, clothing and kai of their homelands right across the network 🌏❤️😊

Talofa Lava from all at Kidsfirst Niu where every week is a special celebration of Pasifika languages and culture. Kindy adventure to Woodham Park

At kindergarten the learning follows tamariki’s interests. For Kidsfirst The Bays this meant a bus ride across town to visit the famous Pūriri Tree in Woodham Park, protected for its impressive size and historical significance. It’s also the place where Monarch butterflies from all over Christchurch gather to hibernate. The trip was a special celebration of the butterfly life cycle, which tamariki have been exploring at kindy. Much whakamanamana was also had in the park’s open spaces, playground, and bird aviaries. Ka mau te wehi The Bays – what a great way to bring the learning to life 🦋❤️

Safety lessons with smiles

The people in our neighbourhood play such an important role in strengthening connections that tamariki have to local communities. At Kidsfirst Linwood, emergency services personnel like Elysse and Hone the Puppy from Hato Hone St John are regular visitors. Tamariki get a glimpse into the important work ambulance officers do and learn life-saving information like how to call 111 in an emergency. Community Constable Spike Crowther is another familiar face – on his last visit he joined Linwood’s morning waiata and talked about his role in keeping the Linwood community safe. Tamariki explored the equipment on his vest, tried it on (it was very heavy!), and practised what to say to a police officer if they ever got lost. Flashing lights and lots of smiles were part of a warm kindy haere mai at the end of this very special visit 🚔😊🚑
