In our freshly renovated character building in Addington, Kidsfirst Selwyn Street shines with light and warmth. Our small group sizes create deep connections, while regular visits to our ‘grand-friends’ at the local rest home build special intergenerational bonds.

Why Choose Us

At Kidsfirst Selwyn Street, tamariki develop through their own interests at their own pace with support from fully qualified and registered kaiako.

Our renovated character building blends historic charm with modern learning spaces, creating bright and warm environments that welcome whānau into kindergarten life. These thoughtfully designed areas support both individual discovery and group learning while honouring our building’s heritage.

We’ve been at the heart of the local community for generations, with close ties to nearby schools, involvement in local events and regular visits with our ‘grand-friends’ at the local rest home

Outside, our Big Backyard features established trees and gardens that spark curiosity and exploration.

Everyday kindergarten life responds to children’s interests and whānau aspirations, with tamariki actively contributing to planning decisions that shape their learning journey.

Nau mai, haere mai – make a time to visit us and remember, you’re always welcome at Kidsfirst.

Why Kidsfirst Kindergartens

With over 100 years of proud legacy, Kidsfirst Kindergartens is a not-for-profit organisation that supports and leads kindergartens across Canterbury, the West Coast and Central Otago. Generations of South Island tamariki and whānau have passed through our gates, and we have strong ties to local communities.

Our kindergartens are down to earth places with warm, nurturing teachers with a rich range of resources and environments to explore.

One of the hallmarks of our kindys is that you’re always welcome here – whānau are encouraged to visit and stay, and take part in kindergarten life. We love it when families share their skills, and culture too – our kindergartens are some of the most diverse learning environments around, and children learn best when teachers and whānau work together.

Te Whāriki, the New Zealand Curriculum, guides our teaching and learning programmes, while the kindergarten philosophy underpins all we do. Tamariki learn through play in their own time, through their own interests, guided by trained teachers who are registered with the Teaching Council of New Zealand. You’ll often find our kindergartens located on, or near, local primary schools. Preparation for school and a smooth transition are a key part of the work for our kaiako.

Our kaiako are overseen by Professional Leaders with a focus on quality and ensuring the highest educational standards. Formerly known as the Canterbury Westland Free Kindergarten Association, Kidsfirst – and its kindergartens – consistently receive strong reports from the Education Review Office. You can read more about their assessment of our governing organisation here.

What Families Say

Enrolling my son in this Kindy was the best decision I’ve made for him. We moved from another centre (after visiting a few before that) and from the moment we walked in to Selwyn St Kindy we were made to feel so welcome; all staff immediately engaged with me, my son and my younger daughter too. Communication has been excellent, both in person and through the online platform, we always know what’s happening day to day. The kindy has a great large outdoor space and a beautiful and engaging indoor space. The teachers go above and beyond, embracing the strengths of families and celebrating the diverse community. What I love most is the genuine love and energy for the children, they truly put kids first and always take the time to comfort and listen to the children and their needs. They do it all, so many wonderful opportunities for the kids, they seek out interesting learning opportunities They sing with the kids, bake, use lots of te reo, actively teach about managing emotions, I really cannot fault them. It’s the kindy I wish all kids could have!

- Kidsfirst Selwyn Street Whānau

We loved our time at Selwyn Street Kidsfirst. Beautiful community spirit - we felt like our whole whānau was cared for not just our preschoolers. Wonderful outdoor area, beautiful indoor spaces.

My Son attended Selwyn Street Kids first Kindy from when he was 3 until he was 5 ½. From the moment we first walked in to visit the staff were friendly, engaged and obviously cared about the children. I didn't look at anymore centres once I had visited, and enrolled him straight away. The team are just wonderful, the outdoor space is lovely.

- Kidsfirst Selwyn Street Whānau

Kidsfirst Selwyn Street is such a loving family orientated environment. I love the friendships I have built with each and every one of the teachers, and have all played a significant role in my daughters life and I will miss this place when my daughter moves onto school. I would recommend the kindergarten to anyone, and 'Kidsfirst' really rings true to its name.
